Located just 7 km / 4 miles to the north of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS) is the largest airport in Portugal, handling in excess of 10 million passengers per annum through its single terminal. Established in the early 1940s, Lisbon Portela Airport is surrounded by an urban landscape and is located alongside Campo Grande, Encarnacao, Lumiar, Musgueira and Teresinhas.
The airport has grown to become the main air hub for Portugal and is served my numerous domestic and international scheduled airlines, such as BRA Transportes Aéreos (Brasil Rodo Aéreo), easyJet, SATA International and TAP Portugal (Transportes Aéreos Portugueses). With over 20 counters and capable of handling over 1,500 passengers every hour, the new Terminal 2 at Lisbon Portela Airport has recently opened and lies on the southern side of the facilities, next to the Segunda Circular.

Many public bus services run to and from Portela Airport and Lisbon city centre throughout the day, including the efficient Aerobus and Carris services. There is also an airport shuttle bus that runs beyond Lisbon, as far as Estoril and Cascais in the west. Taxis are available 24 hours a day and are metered, connecting locations such as Alfomelos, Amadora, Bobadela, Moscavide and Sacavém, while a nearby railway station links with the extensive Portuguese rail network.

Dating back to 1942, Lisbon Portela Airport has long been one of Portugal's leading airports. Its success was instant and much forward thinking had been given regarding capacity levels, and the airport opened complete with four long runways. Over the following years, a new passenger terminal was constructed and the runways extended to cope with Boeing aircraft and the next generation of airbuses.
Cash machines are scattered throughout Portela LIS Airport and bureau de change booths are located within both the arrivals and departures areas. A full service bank operated by Totta can also be found in departures, along with a post office, as well as first-aid, baby changing, left luggage and lost property facilities spread throughout Lisbon's airport.
The Departures area is well stocked with snack bars and restaurants, and these include the Ibersol Cockpit Bar, Astrolábio snack bar, Delta Cafe, Express Cafe and even the rather upmarket Harrods Knightsbridge coffee shop. Those with time on their hands at Lisbon Portela Airport will find a huge selection of shops and duty-free outlets, such as the Divers and Relay bookstores, Lacoste and Lune Bleu fashion outlets, and the Vista Alegre gift shop. Also popular is the Cores Doces food store, where you will find an array of tasty Portuguese delicacies.
Conference facilities are available at Lisbon Portela Airport and can be booked in advance if necessary. In addition, lounges are provided by Apolo, Icaro and Ulisses, offering basic business facilities and Internet access. These lounges are located on the second floor of the arrivals area.
